History of Pelargonium

Pelargonium sidoides & Pelargonium reniforme are flowering plants native to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and the adjacent Lesotho highlands. They are both known as the South African Geranium.

The plant root extract was first introduced to the UK as a potential treatment for Consumption in 1907.

More than a century of traditional use in Europe and across Southern Africa has led to the licensing of Pelargonium root extracts by the German Federal Institute of Drugs and Medical Devices in 2005, and the MHRA certification for the sale of some Pelargonium extract products as herbal remedies in the UK.
